72 Hour Kits

Our ward focus this year is preparedness.  So as the year is coming to an end Bishop Hall has asked everyone to revisit their 72 hour kits.  He has said that he doesn't feel any impending doom but does however have a strong feeling that we as a ward need to focus on our 72 hour kits.  Well he was talking directly to us Slattery slackers.  When we packed for the move we went through our kits and most everything got thrown out, including several of the bags.  Something we learned is even though pop top cans are convenient, if squished, to hot, to cold, ect., you will have a mess and be hungry.

So we moved to Las Vegas with no 72 hour kits and have lived the last 22 months without them as well.  Slackers I tell ya!  So with the Bishop reminding us every week that we need to get our focus on, Dan and I went shopping for supplies.  We hit the jackpot at DI, and managed to get everyone a can opener.  We went to Winco for food stuff.

Tonight Dan is home from work, even though he wouldn't normally be.  So finally all the things that have been accumulating in the dining room can be dealt with.  We sort of had an assembly line going.  I am not quite sure how but Dan some how ended up dividing up the feminine hygiene.  He's a true father of daughters.  There was almost a brawl over the flavored oatmeal packets.  I imagine if as the girls call it the zombie apocalypse happens there will be some bartering for the favorite flavor.

So we don't have everything that we should in our bags right now, but we have a good start.  We at least won't starve for 3 days.

Here is a list of what we have right now:
 * instant mashed potato cup
 * easy mac n cheese cup
 * cup of noodle
 * 3 oatmeal packets
 * small can of peas
 * can of mandarin oranges
 * can of ravioli
 * tuna packet
 * 4 packages hot cocoa
 * 3 packages apple cider
 * sandwich bag of hard candy
 * package of gum
 * 4 packages of fruit snacks
 * 2 liter bottles of water
 * shampoo
 * toothpaste
 * toothbrush
 * deodorant
 * feminine hygiene supplies
 * can opener
 * 3 spoons
 * reusable bowl
 * toilet paper

So obviously there are lots of other things we still need to gather and put into our kits.  Things on the immediate list are extra clothes, socks, space blankets, matches, copies of important documents and some money.  The girls also mentioned getting the small size set of scriptures.

Dan also wants to gather a bag of extra things that would hopefully make your life easier if needed, like sterno, a hatchet, twine, rope, a tarp.  You know guy stuff.

So how are your 72 hour kits?  When was the last time you looked in them?  Would you eat the food you have packed in them?
